Essential Blues Recording
Johnie Lewis – Alabama Rural Blues In The Big City
Johnie Lewis – Alabama Slide Guitar – Arhoolie Records CD 9007
In Harley Cokliss’s acclaimed 1972 Chicago blues documentary simply entitled Chicago Blues, there are a couple of scenes with Johnie Lewis both speaking and presenting his unique brand of blues. One passage finds him performing what can arguably be called his signature tune, “Hobo Blues,”, and another finds him offering “Jumpin’ Jive,” a rollicking tune that finds him not only playing spirited guitar but also blowing an infectious kazoo melody run throughout the song. It is all blues art of the highest order!
Lewis was not only an accomplished bluesman, but he was also notable for his gospel work. Born in late October, 1908, he made his way to Chicago in the 1930s, staying until his passing in early October, 1992. This excellent 12-song collection Lewis’ is the only full-length outing he ever recorded. It stands as a primer of not only his superlative blues approach, but of the lofty capabilities of one man, his guitar, and his high proficiency to present a story against the background of grand slide guitar prowess that makes it an essential document of the most primal, individualistic musical methodology.
Lewis’ spoken asides set up his impressive cuts, providing quenching context. His majestic slide guitar efforts ring, shatter, and tingle with clarity and vibrancy, and his song topics run the gamut from life’s inequities, faith, social heartbreaks, and gospel aspirations. Lewis sings with authority and conviction, and each tune is a story in and of itself, with their themes fully realized.
Lewis was a painter by trade, and Cokliss became aware of Lewis because of his occupation; that chance encounter led to this Arhoolie Records collection that stands the test of time as a document of yet another rural Southerner who migrated to Chicago, bringing his music along for the ride. It is an overall magnificent blues manuscript!
This glorious outing is considered essential as a chronicle of the wealth of blues talent that at one time hid in plain sight in Chicago. It is worthy listening, indeed!
