Katie Webster – Swamp Boogie Queen, Indeed
Katie Webster – Katie Webster – Flyright Records FLYCD 12
This 1989 release is a very generous 20-cut slice of original tracks recorded during the 1958-1961 period by the swamp blues queen whose lofty reputation as a piano pummeling ace was cemented during that period. Webster found a later-life career resurgence thanks to the strength of three Alligator Records releases dating to the late 1980s and early 1990s.
In her early heyday, Webster plied her considerable piano skill set to great purpose with session work for the swamp blues being produced by J.D. Miller for the Excello label, for artists including Jimmy Wilson, Lazy Lester, Clarence Garlow, Guitar Junior (aka Lonnie Brooks), and Phil Phillips, among others.
But also, Webster cut her own terrific sides with Miller in the period indicated earlier, with her unrestrained boogie sensibilities on full display. Here, Webster shines most luminously as the Bayou boogie chanteuse that she was, queen if you will, her romping South Louisiana spirit captivating all who partook of it.
Dance workouts, New Orleans’ carefree breezes, and swamp blues-soaked numbers highlight Webster’s profound influences, ones that so magnificently infused her music.
This grand document serves as a primer for the glowing light that Webster was. She left us too soon at the age of 63, but this collection will continue to inspire all who give it a spin.
Highly recommended!
