Lonesome Sundown – Swamp Blues Genius

Lonesome Sundown – Bought Me A Ticket – The Legendary Jay Miller Sessions Volume 8 – Flyright Records LP 529

There is a curious relationship between certain Excello Records artists and their Jimmy Reed aura.  More than anything, the modest and effectual guitar designs, intense harmonica schemes, and slow, laconic vocal style inherent in swamp blues can often run parallel to Reed’s blues charm.  One can hear it in the work of Slim Harpo, as an example of an Excello artist who incorporated the swamp blues traits indicated above that can be fairly compared to Reed’s blues fare.

Born Cornelius Green before taking his well-recognized stage and recording name, Lonesome Sundown’s delivery was more thick and abrupt, a style that was more in line with, say, that found in the big city urban blues of Chess Records legend Muddy Waters, to cite one artist.

Lonesome Sundown undoubtedly left a high mark within the blues, with several of his compositions stand the test of time as unforgettable swamp blues pinnacles, and rightfully blues classics, in general.  Those include ”I’m A Mojo Man,” “I’m A Samplin’ Man,” and “My Home Is A Prison.”

This 1977 12-cut compilation culls superb work from Lonesome Sundown that was produced via the capable hands of legendary Excello studio man J.D. “Jay” Miller.  There isn’t anything found here that is less than completely intriguing and doesn’t fully capture not only Lonesome Sundown’s spectacular bag of swamp blues masteries, but also of the whole of the infectiousness of the swamp blues flair.

Below are the amazing titles found on this timeless swamp blues album.  Should you acquire it, I am confident that it will visit your turntable over and over again.
