Here is an instantly satisfying 25-cut mix of absolutely stellar early blues, stomps, drags, and rags from Carl Martin and his guitar and vocals, Willie “61” Blackwel likewise via his six-string work and singing, along with the exciting added bonuses of sterling work by the Tennessee Chocolate Drops (Roland Armstrong double bass), Howard Armstrong (violin), and Carl Martin (guitar), and if that isn’t thrilling enough, also presented are two enthralling selections by Louie Bluie (Howard Armstrong) on mandolin and violin and guitar man supreme Ted Bogan.
The dynamic outings here were recorded at two locations including the St. James Hotel in Knoxville, Tennessee, and in Chicago, Illinois, with the entirety of these amazing offerings being released on the Vocalion, Bluebird, OKeh, Decca, and Champion labels.
Supporting the efforts of the featured artists here are Willie Bee James and Charlie McCoy and their guitars on certain of Martin’s cuts, along with Chuck Segar’s piano work. An unknown tenor saxophone player also aids Martin on a song.
Alfred Elkins assists on washtub bass on Blackwell’s tunes.
