Dr. Isaiah Ross – Call The Doctor – Testament Records TCD 5009

He indeed was a vestige of a former period when roaming country bluesmen of the very early 20^th century plied their trades at the rustic frolics, fish fries, picnics, and in the jukes.  Ross was a veritable musical machine, a one-man band who played guitar, harmonica, hi-hat cymbal, and bass drum while also singing.  He was capable of mighty feats of highly inspired blues, breakdowns, and instrumentals portraying, among other things, a song built around the atmosphere of a fox chase.  It has to be heard for the interested to appreciate its greatness.

Originally released in 1965 by Testament Records, this 1994 re-release includes one additional cut, and satisfyingly offers all aspects of Ross’ proficiencies.  Never has one man been able to produce such masterful frameworks of artistry built around an abundance of multi-instrumental competencies.  His ability to create such well-crafted commotions is evidence of dedication to the artistry of the one-man band concept.

The percussive backbone of Ross’ songs alone will have the listeners’ feet tapping and heads bobbing within opening seconds of the collection’s first selection “Cat Squirrel.”

Ross sings in a powerful manner, no doubt necessitated to be heard above the din of his multi-instrumental attack.  Each song brings anticipation to the eavesdropper into Ross’ musical output, and he never disappoints.
