Rob Rio – Blues And Boogie Piano Artistry That Should Not Fly Under The Musical Radar
Rob Rio – Bankin’ On The Boogie – Boss Productions BP 004
This 1992 20-track outing by the proclaimed “Boss Of Boogie” is a musical joy front-to-back. Rio is a modern master of the 1940s and 1950s jump blues and boogie-woogie dictionaries who was inducted into The Boogie Woogie Piano Hall Of Fame in 2008, and more than rightfully so. Originally hailing from The Bronx, New York but calling California home now for many years, Rio is a festival and club favorite, both here and abroad, plying his piano trade as both a solo act and as part of his band The Revolvers.
On this collection, one would be hard-pressed not to discern Rio’s prime influences, of which he perceptibly includes blues and boogie greats Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Jimmy Yancey, Otis Spann, and Memphis Slim, among others, but also jazz inspirations such as Errol Garner and Oscar Peterson, plus great multi-genre geniuses no less than that of Ray Charles.
Musical luminaries who have justly embraced Rio’s greatness consist of Floyd Dixon and Charles Brown; two of many.
It is a true delight to just put this disc on and let Rio’s bountiful piano proficiencies, highly-entertaining lyrical exhibitions, and pleasing interpretations of his varied stimuli and wholly nourishing original compositions transport one to a position of lofty musical joy.
Whether an invigorating instrumental (“Rio A La Yancy”) , a wry take on a situational malady (“Dog Duty Blues”), perceived prowess as a doctor of love (“Chiropractor Blues”), appreciation for a fuller female form “(Fat Girl Boogie”), or the cautionary tenor surrounding affairs of the heart (“Time Will Tell”), throughout, Rio amazes with his broad and staggering piano aptitudes and impressive vocal capacities.
Supporting Rio are a troupe of musical associates including esteemed guitarists Greg Hormel and Junior Watson, bassist Larry “The Mole” Taylor, and Mitch Kaschmar on harmonica, among a total group who all contribute to Rio’s musical visions with respect and high-quality impacts.
Simply, wow, this is lastingly raised piano-based artistry in the high echelon of today’s sphere!
