The Chicago String Band – Four Collaborating Chicago Bluesmen At Their 1960s Best

The Chicago String Band – The Chicago String Band – Testament Records TCD 5006

This 1994 14-song release captures timeless work by the assemblage of Carl Martin, Johnny Young, John Lee Granderson, and John Wrencher.  Originally recorded in Chicago in 1966 as a 12-cut LP (Testament Records LP T-2220), here we find the sterling work of a foursome of veteran bluesmen still at the zeniths of their individual and collective powers.  Martin, Granderson, and Young all wonderfully contribute on guitar (along with Bill Foster on one selection), with Martin and Young plying their substantial proficiencies on mandolin, while John Wrencher’s brilliant harmonica enhances across the proceedings.  All four bluesmen’s vocals are in fine form, and Martin’s violin adds yet another layer to the tasty blues that were laid down.  It is evident from the grand results here that the blues kinship and personal friendships and mutual respect among all involved was high.  The mid-to-late 1960s Chicago blues scene had much to offer, and this document certainly bears that out.

This astounding body of work comes very close to being essential to any worthy blues collection in my mind’s eye.  Nonetheless, it is considered highly recommended!
