J.T. “Funny Paper” Smith – Lyrical Virtuosity Unfolds
J.T. “Funny Paper” Smith – J.T. “Funny Paper” Smith (The Howling Wolf) – Complete Recorded Works In Chronological Order Including: Magnolia Harris And Dessa Foster 1930-1931 – RST Records BCD-6016
This generous 22-cut RST Records release presents the Texas bluesman’s phenomenal work over a two-year arc replete with what some would cite as his rather average vocal and guitar styles; on that point, this reviewer feels those people would be completely incorrect. However, what sets Smith’s astounding work apart from his contemporaries, and indeed from the whole of blues artists of all time, are his astonishing lyrics. His stanzas remain his lofty hallmarks; they are verse and rhyme of the highest distinction. Smith’s lyric poetry places him in rarified air with those such as fellow Texan bluesman Lightnin’ Hopkins (a man who wove vivid imagery within each composition), and Rice Miller aka Sonny Boy Williamson II, a man whose ability to paint musical portraits was unparalleled. Smith’s blues lyrics for any given song, which by the way could easily run onto both the “A” and “B” sides of a 78rpm record, remain verbal theater of the loftiest order.
Smith’s signature tunes are here, including “Howlin’ Wolf Blues – No. 1” and “Howlin’ Wolf Blues – No. 2,” “Seven Sisters Blues – No. 1” and “Seven Sisters Blues – No. 2,” and his magnum opus “Fool’s Blues,” along with his pairings with vocalists Magnolia Harris and Dessa Foster where he accompanied them on guitar.
Smith’s works contain lyrical genius rarely encountered in a genre that could be argued is in part built on shared phrases. Sitting back and really listening to Smith’s lyrics is a joy.
Essential, indeed, to any serious blues collection!
